Ageing as a Process
Aspects Related to Gerontophobia
Abstract
This article aimed to investigate the term gerontophobia as a specific phobia and its social and cultural reinforcers. With the intention of articulating Community Social Psychology (PSC) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), as a resource that provokes the autonomy of the elderly in a dualistic way between their individuality and the community. Studies point to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy as a successful empirical method in the treatment of Specific Phobia. Because irrational beliefs and cognitive distortion are the basis of specific phobia, I highlight Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT), for its effectiveness and significant results, which will have an impact on improving the quality of life of the elderly and concomitantly in all social systems.
